French medal minted in memory of Simone Weil.  Weil was a moral and political philosopher, teacher, activist and mystic that searched for truth and ways to overcome the injustices of the world.
 
SHE WAS BORN IN PARIS FEBRUARY 3,1909. WEIL'S PARENTS DR' BERNARD AND SELMA WEIL ,WERE BOTH JEWISH BUT NOT RELIGIOUS. WEIL WAS FORCED TO FLEE TO AMERICA WITH HER FAMILY IN 1942 TO ESCAPE HITLER'S INVADING ARMY. ALTHOUGH SHE ENJOYED HER STAY IN AMERICA, SHE COULD NOT ENDURE THE GUILT SHE EXPERIENCED FOR NOT SUFFERING ALOND WITH HER COMPATRIOTS IN FRANCE. AFTER 7 MONTHS IN AMERICA,WEIL LEFT FOR ENGLAND TO JOIN THE FREE FRENCH. SHORT AFTER SHE WAS DIAGNOSED WITH TUBERCULOSIS AND DIED IN 1943 AT THE AGE OF 34.
